Judge Self joined the firm, as "Of Counsel," on February 1, 2013. He served as Judge of the Probate Court of Bibb County from April 18, 1989 until his retirement on December 31, 2012. He has been appointed by Governor Nathan Deal as a Senior Judge of the Probate Courts of Georgia. He will be practicing part-time only and will narrowly focus his practice on probate and guardianship/conservatorship matters and Elder Law.
Judge Self obtained his BBA (Accounting) in 1971 and his JD in 1974 from the University of Georgia. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Macon Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
Since taking office in 1989, and in retirement, Judge Self has been an active member of and a Past President of the Georgia Council of Probate Court Judges. In 2000, he was named "Outstanding Probate Judge of the Year" by the Council. In 2010, Judge Self authored the Revised Handbook for Probate Judges in Georgia and has authored the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 supplements. He also has authored the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 supplements to the Georgia Probate Judges' Benchbook.
